The dance-theatre project Intimacy is based on the novel of
the contemporary British author Hanif Kureishi. It tells the
story of Jay, a man who is about to leave his family – his
wife Susan and two sons. The novel is an intimate record of
the last night, which Jay is spending in his house. During
the night he is re-evaluating his entire life and looking
for an explanation and justification of his deed.
Kureishi, faithful to his controversial reputation and in
an effort to shock the reader, takes an unconventional and
civil angle on the topic of the break-up of a marriage. Jay
is by no means an ideal husband. He has a young lover Nina.
Intimacy is an original and at the same time cruel testimony
to an irreparably damaged relationship between two people,
to an absence of the feeling of intimacy as basis for love
and marriage.
